Exceedingly abundantly above all we could ask or imagine

Genesis 42; Job 8; Mark 12; Romans 12

Romans 12 is one of my favorite chapters in God’s Word. It describes the outcome of believing rightly in Jesus Christ and what the Christian life is like because of faith in Him. It begins this way:

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1–2)

One of my nephews married a Christian who told me that she likes to be in charge, to have a measure of control of her schedule. However, her plans were continually side-tracked by interruptions. Finally she realized God was teaching her that her life is not her own; she belongs to Him and so does her time and to-do list. Since that, she takes each day as His and thinks of all interruptions as something God may want included. She says that she does not own her life — Jesus does. Because of her ‘living sacrifice’ she has an understanding of the will of God that escapes far too many Christians.

My sister lived like that too. Her memorial service yesterday made clear that her life was not her own, but a life lived as an expression of her love for Jesus. She was honored in every way, yet it was Jesus who was glorified. In that, our hearts were turned toward Him in praise.

The result of giving our lives to Jesus in such literal completeness is a life that stands out, a life that blesses others and causes a desire to also follow Him. This life includes all that is described beautifully in the rest of the chapter. People like this are a joy to be around! They are vital examples of:
God’s gracious gift of faith, humility and sound thinking.
Deep oneness and unity with other Christians, realizing we are diverse in our gifts yet one in the Body of Christ.
Genuine love. I saw that last night in a family of many believers who were open, intimate, honest, full of fun and laughter. The love flowed like fine wine without the wine. Amazing.
Hatred of evil yet not dwelling on it but focusing on what is good.
Brotherly affection, out-doing one another in showing honor and respect.
Not lazy or neglecting others but serving each one as if they are Jesus.
Full of hope, full of patience when clouds arise, quick to pray.
Quick to meet the needs of God’s people and always welcoming others.
Blessing those who don’t agree, even if they persecute them.
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weeping with those who weep. Living in harmony with one another.
Not stuck up. Caring about everyone. No self-assurance, only deep faith in God’s care.
No retaliating if ill-treated but treating enemies with respect and the same care given to friends.
Overcoming evil with great good. (Romans 12:3–21)
All this we experienced yesterday because of the marvelous grace of God. He blessed exceedingly abundantly above all I could ask or imagine and for that, I am so deeply grateful. Our God is an amazing and wonderful God.
