“Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.” (Ecclesiastes 4:1)
This morning’s news describes one more senseless and horrible
act of violence and evil. Saturday night, it happened here in our city, but
last night and far worse in Nevada. More and more the line is drawn between righteous
and wicked. This event is like so many others, seems designed to keep everyone
in fear and looking over their shoulders. I have no words, only to say that God
is not the author of fear and that the rain falling outside my window seems
like His loving tears.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)
“This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.” (Psalm 119:50)

Jesus, You know the hairs on each head, and surely the
sorrows and fears of each heart. May Your precious promises comfort those whose
grief is great and alleviate all fears.
