Why Pray?

As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice. And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and have made a name for yourself, as at this day, we have sinned, we have done wickedly. “O Lord, according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy hill, because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a byword among all who are around us. Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord, make your face to shine upon your sanctuary, which is desolate. O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. (Daniel 9:13–18)
I ’ve sometimes had the notion that if I am just good enough and obey God as much as I can, He is more apt to hear and answer my prayers. This is a sin-nature reason for praying — to get or earn God's favor.

It does not work that way and Daniel knew it. He said his pleas were not because of any goodness he could claim, not even the imputed righteousness of a truly saved person. Just as he did not obtain that salvation by works, he did not think that his works would incline God to do what he asked.

According to this prophet and godly man, God answers prayer because of His mercy. This means that when I pray, I am to be surrendered and humble of heart, never thinking that He hears and blesses because I’ve somehow earned it.

Yet even as I say that, I know that disobedience is a good way to shut His ears to my pleas. To obey is better than sacrifice. (1 Samuel 15:22) and if I cherish sin in my heart, He does not listen. (Psalm 66:18) He is far more concerned with a clean heart than whatever I bring to Him in prayer.

Daniel had a job to do. God was about to tell him things of the future, of the end times. His obedience was important so that he could clearly hear what was said. While theologians often wrestle with his predictions, God said this:
Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand. And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days. Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days. But go your way till the end. And you shall rest and shall stand in your allotted place at the end of the days.” (Daniel 12:10–13)
No one will understand except the wise, and most of what I read and hear is either jumbled and unclear, or bragged about as if the entire proclamation is known only to them. Sadly, this may mean that wise people either are very rare, or they know to keep their mouths shut.
Lord Jesus, You want obedience because it is the best thing for me and You want the best for me because You are merciful. You are amazing. I have nothing to offer You but pleas for the fullness of Your Spirit that I might always listen to You and do what You say.
