In the lion’s den?

All the high officials of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an injunction, that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. Now, O king, establish the injunction and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.” Therefore King Darius signed the document and injunction. When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. (Daniel 6:7–10)

The king was reminded that his decree could not be revoked, and was told that Daniel ignored it. He must suffer the consequences so was thrown into a den of lions.

Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions. As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish. The king declared to Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.” Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. And the king commanded, and those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions—they, their children, and their wives. And before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces. (Daniel 6:19–24)

This reveals the power of God. I’m reminded of two things. One, it explains why Daniel was not with the other three in the furnace. God had a different plan for him. And two, this alludes to God's  protection from the destructive power of Satan. These NT verses come to mind.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. (2 Timothy 4:17)

Jesus is the life-giving Lion of Judah. Satan is the life-destroying enemy and is totally opposite Him. The lions in Daniel’s life point ahead to the ‘lion’ who wants God's people to stop praying and worshiping. Yet our God protects His faithful children. This roaring lion could not destroy an obedient Daniel and he cannot destroy us.

Jesus, in these days of increasing persecution, I often think of the truth that “You win.” Even if those who hate Your people hate us to the point of taking our lives, we go into eternal life with You. We win, as did Daniel and the Apostle Paul who escaped. You declared this true at that ancient den and keep declaring it — and because of You, I live forever, no matter what that evil lion can say or try to do.

Using lies to cover lies?

Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”; therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.” Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be beaten down by it. As often as it passes through it will take you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be sheer terror to understand the message. (Isaiah 28:15–19)

The one thing that I cannot bear is lies. If a person lies to me, I usually cut them off. In my mind, the relationship cannot be anything more than superficial or artificial. Trust is broken and without a restoration of reliability, I tend to want proof before believing anything that person says. 

This sounds cruel and a lack of love for the NT says: “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” However, it also describes love as “not insisting on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.” (1 Corinthians 13:5–7)

Another verse says, “By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar” (Romans 3:4) and Jesus called religious unbelievers ‘liars’ in John 8:44. Does everyone lie except God?
 
It is plain that trusting God makes sense. It also makes sense that in many matters of life, I can evaluate trust by comparing what people say and do with what God says and does. Those who can admit lying may be justified in their words, and “prevail when judged.” This is the value of confessing sin. If a person can do that, they seem far more likely to be honest about most things. But if the lie is covered by another lie, this is a red flag, a warning to be cautious with my trust.

It is folly to lie to God. He knows my thoughts and my heart, even the words I will say before I say them. His foundation is Jesus Christ and every person will be tested alongside this sinless cornerstone. Apart from faith in Him, in His death and resurrection, who can pass that test? 

As the Word says, hating lies is a godly attitude, but hating people is not. The only way I can manage that is to pray for those who lie and ask God to deal with them in such a way that the reasons for those lies, such as fear, false ambition, self-protection, etc., fall away. Liars need to know that they are perfectly loved regardless of their performance.

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. (1 John 4:18–21)

My attitude toward those who lie is an attitude of fear also, of not trusting God to deal with them, and not being willing to be like Jesus who died for those who sin, including the sin of lying. I know these things, yet sometimes let my own fears allow the flesh to deal with liars instead of trusting the Spirit of God.

Jesus, this has been a difficult couple of days, yet I know Your heart of exposing my lack of obedience is an act of love. You want me to be like You — and that is the most loving motivation of all. So is Your power to change my heart. Keep my focus stayed on You, not on the pain of being lied to, or on using anger to deal with the pain. Your response is the only way: Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing… 

No gods

The Lord appeared to Solomon a second time. . . . And the Lord said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea, which you have made before me. I have consecrated this house that you have built, by putting my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time. And as for you, if you will walk before me, as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you, and keeping my statutes and my rules, then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ But if you turn aside from following me, you or your children, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, and Israel will become a proverb and a byword among all peoples. And this house will become a heap of ruins. Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore the Lord has brought all this disaster on them.’ ” (1 Kings 9:2–9)

Although keeping the Law never was not nor could be the means of salvation, obeying God always is the means of blessing. This is because God's way is good for us. Just one example is the results of serving Him rather than other gods. He is Almighty and nothing is impossible for Him. As for other gods, what are they? Carved images? Imaginary creatures? Stone carvings? Forces of weather and nature controlled by what? (Or Who?) Mere humans? Me, myself, and I?

Other gods boil down to no gods, just human invention and imagination? The NT says as much, yet also attributes the idea of gods to demon forces and Satan. Jesus defines him, and other passages speak of demonic powers whose task is to discredit the truth He brings:

Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” (Matthew 16:23)
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. (Matthew 25:41)

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)

Just writing these words makes me shiver. Satan whispering suggestions to rule my own life gives me more reasons to avoid anything that is not from my Lord and Savior. 

Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. (1 Corinthians 8:4–8)
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? You observe days and months and seasons and years! I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain. (Galatians 4:8–11)

From Scripture and experience, the power of obedience is clear, as is the power of the enemy who disguises himself as an angel of light and uses subtle lies in his attempts  to destroy me.

Jesus, because of You, I cannot be destroyed, but my witness to the world and ability to glorify You can be messed up by disobedience. Today You again ask me to do several things I’d rather not do. I’m thankful for the encouragement to say yes, and to rely on You for all that I need to obey.

What is truth?

 

These days I dislike several television items: the news, and various pundits who discuss what they think will happen. The dictionary describes them as: “an expert in a particular subject or field who is frequently called on to give opinions about it to the public.” Expert or not, they are still offering an opinion. No one knows the future.

Google says that, “When their personal opinion outweighs considered judgment, people who give opinions, whether on current events, public affairs, sports, media or art are often referred to as "pundits" instead of critics. Critics are themselves subject to competing critics, since the final critical judgment always entails subjectivity.”

While pundits may not call their opinions lies, they cannot claim them to be true. I’ve had a aversion to lies, partly because of the insult I feel when someone lies to me, but even more when I experience the harm that a lie does, whether it is presented as news, or whispered as gossip. If someone lies to me and I catch it, trusting them in the future is almost impossible.

Today’s devotional gives reasons for being more interested in truth. Piper writes that God is truth. This makes lies a total affront to who He is, the triune God. Nothing can nullify His faithfulness and reliability:

What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.” (Romans 3:3–4)

This Almighty God became flesh and His Son, who is the image of the Father, is glorified as truth: 

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)
And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. (Matthew 22:16)

Jesus Himself declared, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6). The Apostle John saw Jesus glorified as faithful and true. He said, “And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war” (Revelation 19:11).

God also lives out the life of the Father and the Son to me in His Spirit, the Spirit of truth. As Jesus said, “When the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness of me.… When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 15:26; 16:13a).

Before Jesus came into my life, every person that I trusted as friends lied to me . Was God allowing that so I would be eager to know Him, the reliable One who would never lie? Perhaps. I once wrote a long poem on how much truth matters. It is an important part of trust. If God makes a promise, believing it depends on being totally convinced that He speaks truth. He will do whatever He says He will do because He is truth. 

PRAY: I see how important truth is and why You have given me a great sensitivity to lies. One more reason is that the devil is a liar. You told those who refused to trust You, “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44) My heart craves truth in defiance of this enemy who wants to destroy my faith with his schemes. Thank You for being the truth and being my Savior from sin — and from lies.

Prisoners of war are not the enemy

 

Scripture is clear who is behind the people who persecute Christians; it is Satan. He lies, blinds people, and causes rebellion and conflict. God allows this for a reason, but I know that we fight a spiritual war with evil, and should not battle with other people. The Bible tells me:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12)

In his assault, this enemy uses an organized army of fallen angels said to be “rulers . . . authorities . . . powers over darkness . . . forces of evil in the heavenly places.” It isn’t a detailed description but indicates his power and that he is not the only one who goes at us with lies and a desire to destroy. As Jesus said of him:

. . . He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)

While those who reject Christ and God are unwitting prisoners of war, captured and mobilized by the enemy to accomplish his purposes, Christians can also be oblivious to Satan’s tactics. I’ve blamed people for the nasty things they do, forgetting that the enemy is always trying to motivate nastiness. If he is going to attack me and try to get all who love Christ to go against Him, it’s logical that he will use those who are already against the Lord to thwart the work and the witness of God’s people. We need to be alert to him and not “ignorant of his schemes.”

For me, this is important for my prayer life and for my relationships with unbelievers, especially those who ridicule faith and make life difficult for God’s people. I’m to be patient, realizing the source of their attitudes. Even though they are responsible for opening themselves up to deception by denying the truth, it is the Liar and Deceiver who fills their hearts with antagonism and animosity toward God and His people. I don’t want to add to that by being angry, bitter, or by retaliating in an ungodly way. Jesus reached out in love to me so that I can reach out to other sinners in love, asking Him to open their eyes and their hearts to the truth.

PRAY: Jesus, I’m thankful You remove spiritual blindness. You do that for me and You are doing it for others. I’ve many on my prayer list that need to see beyond Satan’s lies, not only concerning their behavior and need for You, but the wonder of who You are and the great love that You have for them — even though they are still in their sin (see Romans 5:8).

PONDER: Read Colossians 1:13 and 2 Corinthians 4:3–7 and worship Jesus for what He has done in my life and can do in the lives of those who do not yet believe.

 

 

Power under control

The news declares the latest move by nations who are trying to take over other nations, people groups that are determined to have what other groups have, power-hungry people who want to inherit the earth. Their efforts will not get them what they crave.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)

What is meekness? Some Bible versions translate it as ‘gentle’ with the idea of humility and non-retaliation. This word was used to describe a gentle breeze, a soothing medicine, or a tame horse, examples of power under control. A gentle breeze brings pleasure, but a hurricane brings destruction; a soothing medicine brings healing, but an overdose can kill; a tamed horse is useful, but a wild horse is dangerous. Jesus Christ is the best human example. He said:

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:29)

He is described as “being in the form of God, (but) did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:6–8) And in His meekness, “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” (1 Corinthians 10:26) He could have taken it by force but did not. He choose meekness.

Christ rode into Jerusalem astride a donkey rather than a stallion like others who conquered enemies. He “suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats” (1 Peter 2:21–23).

But He was not weak or cowardly. He never defended Himself, but when His Father’s house was being desecrated, He made a whip and beat those who were defiling it Jesus boldly pronounced judgment on unrepentant sinners, never compromised His integrity, never disobeyed His Father’s will. When the Jewish religious leaders expected commendation, He condemned them and called them children of the devil (John 8:44). They retaliated by having Him crucified. His power was always under control; theirs wasn’t.

Jesus, I’ve never desired to ‘inherit the earth’ but I do desire to be like You. This beatitude requires faith, trusting You to take care of those who are contrary to Your will and determined to eradicate from the face of the planet those who are meek like You. Every day, hundreds of Christ-followers are put to death, often in horrible ways, yet those guilty of such persecution do not realize that they are putting them off this sin-sick place into Your eternal presence and perfection. Even in death, meekness wins — just as it did when You died for the sin of the world and rose again to eternal life. Meekness requires humility. Forgive my pride that pops up far too often. Enable me to allow the Spirit of meekness to rule my thoughts, words, and actions.
