So much of the world seems to have lost its bearings. This
morning, I read an article where a company has been denied ability to do random
drug and alcohol testing of its employees even though their statistics prove
that coming to work impaired by these substances is dangerous and sometimes
deadly toward all workers. That seems crazy enough, but the reason given by the
courts is that: “such testing violates human rights.”
Right after reading that story, the television news told
of a man who crosses the border to buy beer, which is cheaper in the next province than his own. The courts heavily fined him. Apparently, it is not okay to buy beer
wherever you want, but it is okay to go to work drunk or drugged? The law tells
people they must wear a seat belt when driving to protect themselves or others,
and smokers must butt out in no smoking zones. However, if this trend
continues, human rights activists will soon be insisting those laws be repealed
also.
My husband, who has spent years supervising large
construction projects, says that at least 1/3 of the incident reports involve
drugs or alcohol. Not only that, the person who is impaired is not always the
person who is injured or killed. Further, most of these ‘causes’ are not made
known to the general public.
This prompted a discussion at the breakfast table about
biblical prophecy. The Bible says that people will behave with a defiant manner:
“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1–5)
I can hide in my home and avoid some of this, but more and
more notice the difficulty of avoiding such people. These behaviors are the results
of ignoring God and His Word. When these standards are gone, the Bible says people
start “doing what is right in their own eyes” and lose the ability to see the
contradictions and incongruities of their decisions.
Today’s devotional gives the following passage as suggested
reading. It refers to the Second Coming when Jesus will return to judge those
who have refused His salvation and continued to do what is right in their own
eyes.
“Then I (John) saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, ‘Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.’ And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.” (Revelation 19:11–21)
I was teased as a younger person by my brother who called
me a ‘fire and brimstone’ preacher. I cannot remember doing it, but if I was,
here I go again. There is a God who hates sin, but He loves people and reached
out to us with a wonderful plan of salvation:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
This verse is well-known and blesses many, yet many people
walk away from it to their peril. The verses following it explain why:
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.” (John 3:17–20)

Jesus, we are watching our society crumble into
lawlessness. Most people do not see or acknowledge that this is what happens
when You are shoved out of their lives. For a time, Your common grace has
preserved and blessed, but changes are happening. You are allowing people to go
their own way and do their own thing, and we are reaping the results. Have mercy,
oh Lord, have mercy.

Good one, Elsie! At the dinner table, while listening to the news, I can't even begin to tell you the number of times my wife and I will say, "can you believe that?" It's getting crazy out there!
